Sarah over at The Neutral Zone Trap posted a distressing item about the possibility that BGSU might cut hockey. As someone who made many friendships with BGSU players over the years, someone who played in the Summer League there, someone who started officiating games there, I am saddened by this. I know education needs to come first and the university has to do what is right, but it is tough to see this happen while OSU can play before paltry crowds at Value City because the Athletic Department has money to burn.
Bowling Green is the only Ohio school to win a national championship, 25 years ago, at Lake Placid. BGSU was the little school that showed up the big boys at Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin, and other hockey powerhouses, on the ice. The NHL has a lot of Falcons playing, like Rob Blake, coaching, like Dan Bylsma of Pittsburgh, and managing teams, like George McPhee of the Capitals. John Markell, current OSU coach, is a BGSU alum.
I hope that something can be worked out for the hockey program and the university.
